Exploring Dental Tool Improvements

Hi, it's Mia Armonde here to talk to you about family dentistry. As my small family grew into a large one, I found myself at the dental office on a regular basis. Every six months, the kids would go into the dentist for a cleaning or repairs to their teeth. During that time, I took an interest in the various ways the dental tools were evolving. Tools used in the dental industry have grown in leaps and bounds in the last few decades. For example, my kids went from hearing the dental drill to wearing headphones that completely canceled out the sound. Each time we go back into the dentist, I take a close look at the improvements that have arisen since the last visit. The results are astounding. I will cover my findings on this site, so you can also enjoy the improvements to dental tools and techniques.

Understanding The Dentist: 5 Reasons X-Rays Are Necessary

Dentist Blog

If you have ever been to the dentist, then you know that they take X-rays. You also probably know that X-rays are a routine procedure. But do you know why dentists take them? If not, here are five reasons a dentist will take an X-ray of your mouth:

1. Check Bite Alignment

Dentists often take X-rays to get a better look at the alignment of your teeth. The X-ray shows the dentist exactly how your teeth touch and if there are any problems. The x-ray can also show your dentist the alignment of any incoming teeth, such as molars or wisdom teeth. With this information, the dentist can evaluate your bite better and determine if you need any treatment, such as orthodontics.

2. Identify Cavities

Another common reason dentists use X-rays is to identify cavities. An X-ray allows them to see inside your teeth, so they can see even the smallest cavity. The X-ray will also identify problem areas, such as where a cavity might begin to form. Once they have this information, they can evaluate your case and provide treatment which may range from fillings to extractions.

3. Identify Severe Issues

A dentist might also use an X-ray to identify any severe issues you might have. Bone loss, gum disease, and infections all appear on X-rays. If you are found to have any of these issues, an X-ray will also help them to create a treatment plan that may involve larger procedures such as root canals. They can also use the X-ray to identify whether you have any impacted teeth or cysts.

4. Check For Tumors

Dentists might also use X-rays to check for any signs of mouth tumors. While tumors sometimes present themselves as large lumps in the mouth, they might actually be hiding beneath the gums. An X-ray will show the dentist if you have any possible problems that need immediate attention or require further testing, such as a tumor or even cancer.

5. Find Foreign Objects

Finally, a dentist might use an X-ray to locate a foreign item that is your mouth. Food, toothpicks, or other items that get lodged in the mouth can be hard to remove. By knowing the exact location of the item, the dentist can remove it more easily.

Getting an X-ray done may be scary, but it is necessary—and safe. Without X-rays, a dentist would not be able to do his or her job effectively; which means your teeth would be much harder to save. Fortunately, X-ray technology is available, and makes life easier for patients and doctors.
